Read moreMarch 21, 2013The Office of the Chief Coroner has released the Report of Coroner regarding the death of Mr. Muhammad Naqash Ali at Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre in Saskatoon on June 8, 2012.The Lifesaving Society Saskatchewan Branch endorses the recommendation from the Chief Coroner's office regarding the fatal drowning incident that occurred in Saskatoon June 8, 2012. With the growing new immigrant population growing in Saskatchewan in recent years and the research done by the Lifesaving Society on the risk of new immigrants and drowning, we have been developing programs to address these issues.The Coroner's recommendation helps to validate what we are already doing. The Lifesaving Society's research shows that people new to Canada, especially those who have been in Canada for 5 years or less, are at a higher risk of drowning than people born here. In fact, they are 4 times more likely to be unable to swim than those born in Canada.Only 41% of new Canadians have taken formal swimming lessons74% of new Canadians enjoy swimming for fun and recreation71% of new Canadians see swimming as a safe activity for themselves78% see it as a safe activity for their childrenPeople who come to Canada from countries where swimming and swimming lessons are not a strong part of the culture are in a particularly dangerous situation
